The benefits of walking far outweigh the risks of being sedentary. Walking regularly 30 minutes a day can help improve your health on so many levels. Not only can it help you lose weight, it can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. Walking reduces your blood sugar levels and reduces your risk for diabetes. It improves your body’s response to insulin and increases your metabolism, which makes it easier to lose weight.

Walking lowers your blood pressure, thereby reducing your risk for having a stroke. The New England Journal of Medicine cited a study showing a 30% decrease in cardiovascular diseases for those who walked enough to meet physical activity guidelines. Simply by including a one hour walk twice a week, you can increase your odds of disease prevention. Walking helps to lessen joint pain and stave off arthritis. As you walk, your range of motion and mobility escalates from the increased blood flow to strained areas while it strengthens the muscles around your joints.

Walking can boost your immunity and reduce your risk for diseases which in turn can increase your longevity. High-intensity interval walking can help to improve immune function in older adults with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Walking helps you stay active, and improves your quality of sleep.

If you’re having a bad day, walking can improve your mood. Many people walk as a means to relieve stress. Research has shown that walking regularly modifies your nervous system, reducing stress, anxiety and anger. It can help you stay healthy, and live longer. Not only does it make your heart healthier and your brain sharper, it reduces your risk of chronic diseases.

As Spring nears, the days will be warmer and longer. Get outside and start walking. Breathe in the fresh air and reap the benefits of walking as you enjoy the added bonus of vitamin D from the sunshine on your face. Happy walking!
